Which benchtops suit a bathroom vanity undermount sink?

The cut edge of the benchtop is exposed to water, so it needs to be a material that can be cut, polished and sealed. Natural stone, engineered stone, porcelain and solid surface tops all work well. Laminate is generally not suitable, because water can get into the cut edge and cause swelling.

Order your basin before the benchtop

Your stonemason cuts the benchtop to suit the exact basin, then fixes it underneath with brackets or adhesive. Choose the basin first and give the fabricator the basin itself or its template, so the cut-out lines up and the overhang is even all the way around.

Tapware and wastes for undermount basins

Undermount basins have no tap landing. The mixer is either drilled into the benchtop behind the bowl or mounted on the wall with a spout. Browse basin mixers and wall spouts, and match the waste to the overflow using our bath and basin wastes.

Undermount, semi recessed or above counter?

Undermount gives the flattest, easiest-clean bench. A semi recessed basin suits a shallow vanity with no stone top, and an above counter basin makes the bowl the feature.

Undermount basin FAQs

Can I install an undermount basin under a laminate benchtop?

It is generally not recommended. The cut edge of laminate is vulnerable to water and can swell over time. Stone, porcelain or solid surface are better choices.

Who installs an undermount basin?

Usually the stonemason fixes the basin to the underside of the benchtop during fabrication or installation, and the plumber connects the waste and tapware.

Are undermount basins easy to clean?

Yes. With no rim on top of the bench, you can wipe water and toothpaste straight into the bowl.

What is the difference between ceramic and solid surface undermount basins?

Ceramic is glazed and very hard-wearing. Solid surface has a smooth matte feel and suits a softer, contemporary look.
